Do you need to have surgery if you have a cyst on your neck?

This is a question for a friend %26gt;~%26lt; She is flipping out because she heard rumors about it

Do you need to have surgery if you have a cyst on your neck?
if the cyst is cancerous most likely yes they will have to do surgery so that the cancer doesn't spread also if the cyst is painful she will want to get rid of it and they only way to get rid of a cyst is to have surgery..the doctor will have to take a biopsy of the cyst and they can then decide to remove it or drain it..if the cyst starts to get an odor then it is infected and she will for sure need to have it removed...hate to be the bearer of bad news but tell her i wish her the best and good luck....

Reply:cysts are not dangerous if she gets surgery it will be considered "cosemetic" and it will cost a bundle. As long as it isnt bothering her just leave it alone
Reply:In a word, no. In many words, my daughter had a cyst on her neck when she was 9 months old or so. It was a water cyst and cleared up on its own. My son had a cyst on his neck in his early teens, and it was aspirated (the doctor stuck a needle in and sucked out the fluid). It depends on the doctor, the type of cyst, there are a lot of variables.





Tell your friend to listen to a medical professional instead of rumors; she'll sleep a lot better at night.
Reply:not necessary...only when pain gets worse and worse......bear in mind it leaves ugly scare so better not.My sister has one apparently a lot of people have it but she refuses to have it operated
Reply:It really depends on the type of cyst (and if it's actually a cyst). If it is not deep or lodged in a muscle a surgeon can remove it in his office with local anisthetic. What we thought was a cyst in my neck was lodged deep in the muscle and turned out to be a reactive lymphnode and needed to be removed in the hospital (still was a piece of cake surgery). Her best bet is to see her MD to have the cyst looked at. Most doctors feel with cysts that if they're not bothering you then leave them alone.
