My 15 yr old shitzu had surgery to remove a large cyst. What OTC med do you recommend other than aspirin?

DON"T DO IT!!! dog's can't break down aspirin and it can cause toxicity because the liver can't metabolize the salicylic acid. Call your vet and see if he can get you a Rx for an animal-friendly pain medication like ketoprofen or etodolac, neither one of these should be given for more than 5 days at a time, so it should suit your needs. call your vet before doing ANYTHING like home-medicating you dog after surgery.

good luck give your dog a hug for me!

ask the vet. You cant give people medicine to a dog unless directed by a vet.
Reply:For what? What are you trying to treat?
Reply:You never want to give your pet any OTC meds without consulting your vet. Your pet is older and could have medical conditions not seen with the naked eye. You also want to ask your vet because you will need the dosage that would be safe for your dog.
Reply:Nothing over the counter. Tylenol can be lethal to dogs. Your dog is 15 years old for goodness sakes. You have done something right all these years...do not blow it now. Please ask your vet. If the dog needed further meds your vet would have let you know...

Best! :-)
Reply:We can give you our suggestions, but I am a Pharmacy Tech and I know that it is best for myself not to give advice and opinion about meds, but I would recommend asking a professional who can make sure this med is not too strong for your pet and also will not harm your pet. Every person and animal is different and it would be in your pet's best interest to call your vet or a local pharmacist to get their perspective. It all depends on your pet and his circumstances.
Reply:I would not recommend anything, did your vet not give you pain medication and/or antibiotics-if not ask your vet but do NOT treat yourself.
Reply:My little dog was always given one baby aspirin by my vet for pain after surgery. Other meds for other things. Best advice is to call your vet and ask.
Reply:Asprin after surgery is not a good idea and that is the only med I know of otc for dogs.

Call your vet and ask if you could pick up something for pain.
Reply:asprin is not a good idea
Reply:You need to give it whatever the vet gave you.
Reply:Human pain medicines are often very toxic and deadly for your pets and given in way different doses than they are for humans and can kill them. Don't do it. Depending on what type of surgery it was she or he might not need it.
Reply:heat would probably aid in taking the pain away.

a heat pad on low under her bedding may help

keep her away from the cold air vents unless she moves to them on her own

warm steam humidifier close to where she rests

warm baths in Epsom salts may also help her aches
